Peter gives marital advice in his first letter. He addresses wives first, stating "In the same way, you wives..." and then he gives some practical advice for wives. Next he addresses the husbands: "In the same way, you husbands..." and lists advice for them. You can read Peter's advice at 1Peter 3. But I would lkie to focus on how Peter begins his advice. What does he mean "in the same way?"
Peter is continuing his discussion from the previous chapter, where he has been discussing submission. He begins "Submit for the Lord's sake to every human institution." Marriage is a tiny institution comprised of two members in an intimate relationship. Despite its small size, it is the foundation for the well-being of God's larger institutions.
So, I propose that the first step in solving marital problems in Christian marriages is to recognize that the couple is to submit to the institution of marriage. It behooves the couple to stay married for the Lord's sake. "What God has joined together, let no man put asunder." God hates divorce. He particularly hates so-called Christian divorce.
But even if you are not contemplating divorce, it is extremely important to have a sacred view of marriage. God will honor your obedience to His design. He promises the wife that her behavior will have a dramatic effect on her husband. He warns the husband that it will not go well with him if he does not treat his wife properly.
So, start at the beginning, and submit to marriage.
