Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior

I've got some bad news and some bad news. We have two very serious problems.

First, we have a very long criminal record. We have broken each of the ten commandments repeatedly. We have sinned a whole bunch.

Second, we are sinners. We can look forward to a life filled with more of the same!

Now I have some very good news. Through the mediation of Jesus, we receive the solution to our two problems. We receive the Holy Spirit through Jesus.

And the Spirit washes away our sin record. From God's standpoint, our sins are removed "as far as the East is from the West." Problem #1 solved!

But the Spirit doesn't stop there. The Holy Spirit also renews us. We become new creations. The old things have passed away. The new things have come. Faith replaces fear. Gratitude replaces obligation. We rejoice in God, rather than avoid Him. We exhibit the fruit of the Spirit: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Problem #2 solved!

Through Jesus comes the Holy Spirit.
